Business is Not Had
“Business is hard.”
I hear this constantly. And I get it — I avoided starting a business for nearly a decade because I believed the same thing.
But here’s the truth: Business isn’t hard. It’s just harder than most people want it to be, for two simple reasons:
  1. They don’t know what’s actually needed (and what isn’t). (
  1. They haven’t developed the essential skills… yet
There’s only 3 things you need, and 3 skills you need. That’s it.
Let’s break this down.

The Only 3 THINGS You Need to Start a Business

  • An interesting way to show up in front of people who might be interested in what you do — this is usually from organic social media (free) or ads (paid).
  • A way to convert those leads into sales — emailing those people who gave you their email (Free with this software— hey look, it’s the same software as above).
That’s it.

If you have those 3 things, you can start a business.

(Eventually you’ll need a way to take money, but you can do that at any point. If you set that up before validating your idea, you’ll waste a lot of time.)

The Only 3 SKILLS You Need to Start a Business

  • The skill of Attracting Attention— learn how to grow an audience on a social platform.
  • The skill of Empathy — learn how to connect with that audience in a way that makes them feel seen.
  • The skill to Write — learn how to serve that audience through writing (emailing them).
These 3 skills build on each other.
The more empathy you have (skill 2), the better you can serve them (skill 3), and the more money you can charge.
But you can have the best empathy and be willing to serve at the highest level, but if you have an audience of 0, you’re serving no one and you won’t make any money…
I’m speaking from experience from my days as a touring drummer — mastering the skill, but now knowing how to build an audience…
I’d be willing to bet that you’re in the same boat.
